Frequently Asked Questions

What is League of Legends?

League of Legends is a free to play game where two teams of five players select unique champions and attempt to overrun the opposing team’s base. To keep the game fresh, Riot Games has pushed out hundreds of updates during the last nine years. Updates have kept League balanced as more than 100 new champions were added and both the visual style and the technical performance were improved. The combination of accessibility and consistent support attracted a broad audience to try the game.

How does Riot make money?

Riot’s games are free to play, with the majority of revenue coming from optional, in-game cosmetic content like character skins. Spending money in League of Legends or any of Riot’s games is never required. It won’t make your character more powerful, and some players play for years without ever spending money.

Riot also generates revenue through esports sponsorships and advertising. As League of Legends grows in popularity, we’re carefully looking for authentic ways to integrate sponsors into our esports programming, at both the professional and college levels.

Riot’s business succeeds if there are a breadth of opportunities for players to learn, improve, compete, and socialize in the world of League of Legends. A thriving scholastic ecosystem can organically create these opportunities for students across North America. This gives Riot the freedom to invest in College League of Legends without charging players or schools to participate.

The College League of Legends season is free for participating players and schools.

How does the RSAA support schools?

We offer a variety of services free to schools, including participation in the College League of Legends Season and Championship, unlocked content for on-campus esports arenas through League Unlocked, and support for student-run clubs.

How do I register to compete in the College League of Legends season?

Registration opens each November each year. To keep up to date on registration, join the College Season Discord.

Does my school need to be a member of a different esports governing body to participate in the College League of Legends season? What if we’re already a member of one of these other bodies?

The RSAA is the only college governing body for League of Legends in the United States and Canada. Membership in a different college governing body is not required for your school to participate. If your school is already a member of a different group or association, this won’t prevent your school from participating in League of Legends. Any accredited higher learning institution in the United States or Canada can participate in the College League of Legends season.

What is League Unlocked?

League Unlocked is a service Riot provides to eligible institutions that unlocks in-game content such as champions and skins. This service uses a combination of IP addresses and MAC addresses to whitelist the computers on which League Unlocked will be active. The service doesn’t require any player information to be activated.

All players participating in an official RSAA-sanctioned college or high school competition receive all champions unlocked via League Unlocked for the length of the competition. This is provided directly to the League of Legends account registered to their school’s official roster.

How does my school get League Unlocked?

How can our school support our student League of Legends community?

There are a variety of ways that schools are now supporting their League of Legends communities, from official recognition of gaming clubs, to varsity scholarships, esports facilities, and game-oriented curriculum. The RSAA doesn’t recommend a specific model because the goals of each school and the needs of each community are different. We do recommend getting to know your on-campus League of Legends community, which might mean scheduling a meeting with club leaders, asking to attend an upcoming student community event, or surveying the student body to understand their needs.

A student at my school has been restricted or banned from participating in League of Legends, what now?

To get details on the specific circumstances, the player must open a Player Support ticket at https://support.riotgames.com. Due to privacy concerns, specific details of account suspensions (e.g. chat logs) are not shared with anyone other than the account owner. The RSAA does not intervene in cases of account suspensions.

How does my child get a League of Legends scholarship?

While each program varies, there are three recurring qualifications to earn a scholarship: First, they need to climb the League of Legends in-game ranked ladder and achieve a ranking of high Diamond or better. Second, study hard and earn a strong high school GPA. Third, keep their in-game behavior sportsmanlike and clean – in-game punishments like temporary bans or chat restrictions can affect a student’s ability to participate, and schools look out for that.

My child has been restricted or banned from participating in League of Legends, what now?

Past account suspension may affect eligibility, but recent behavior is more important than past behavior. If your child has received an in-game punishment, sit down with them and make sure they understand the impact of their behavior on other players, as well as the potential impact it has on their future. Player behavior is always the player’s responsibility.

Riot has historically supported a number of operating partners who have run League of Legends competitions in high school, and will continue to do so. Where can I find the College League of Legends rules?

Information about the current season can be found in the Season link in the left sidebar.

How do I get my school to start a varsity program?

There’s no “right” way to go about this, since every school and administration is different, but there are a few key points of advice. You’ll need to make a strong case to your school administrators, so gather up as much information as you can about LoL on your campus. Show your size, strength, and school pride, as well as the obstacles your team currently faces that would be resolved by administrative support. Remember to present a case that focuses on the lasting impact and sustainability of a varsity LoL program – administrators are always thinking about the long-term impacts of decisions.
